For Nearly a Quarter Century, Ocean Engineering and Energy Systems (OCEES) International, Inc. and its corporate partners have been researching and developing solutions that will help solve world energy challenges and water shortage problems. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a base-load renewable energy production process particularly suited for tropical zones. It uses the ocean’s temperature difference between the warm surface water and the cold deep water to generate both electricity and potable water. This 24/7 energy production technology does not depend on fossil fuels, is not vulnerable to world market fluctuations, and has less environmental impact than other energy producers. Our co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Stephen Oney, was a part of the team that demonstrated the technical viability of OTEC. Dr. Oney participated in the research at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii (NELHA)) and helped design a 210 kW OTEC pilot plant for the co-production of electricity and potable water. It’s important to find an alternative solution to the pollution and expense of oil and to solve the acute water shortage facing many countries – and OCEES is leading the way.

Estimates from a variety of sources, including the American Petroleum Institute, predict that the world’s entire oil reserves will be depleted within this century. Some calculations project the time-frame of such depletion to occur within the next 50 years, based upon estimated total reserves and daily consumption rates. Regardless of the source of these predictions and basic assumptions, there is one fundamental belief upon which there is nearly universal agreement: namely, that the global supply of oil is limited and will, therefore, one day cease as an abundant energy resource. This inevitable depletion flows from the mathematical certainty of takedown, which is the world’s consumption of energy is at a far greater rate than it is being replaced. OCEES’ proven integrated energy and systems approach can provide a solution to this mounting global concern.

OTEC power production facilities offer considerable savings for the producer and consumer while establishing energy and resource independence for the communities it serves. This approach provides a buffer against the long term uncertainties of a rapidly changing energy market by operating predominantly independent of fossil fuels, thereby establishing clearly predictable operating costs and eliminating nearly all adverse environmental impact; all while providing an excellent and competitive return on investment.
