Similar to the availability of air conditioning in conjunction with the OTEC system is the ability to provide economically superior ice storage. With such a large heat sink readily available as provided by the very cold deep ocean water utilized in the OTEC and SDC processes, reliable and economic refrigeration systems can be designed which save significantly on energy usage making ice production and storage more cost effective in the tropical regions.
